Is your fireplace giving you trouble? Is smoke wafting back into your home? Do you want to make sure your fireplace is ready for a long winter? If anything is out of the ordinary with your fireplace system or you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s time to schedule an inspection.
Here at True Ventilation, we follow the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 211, step by step, to ensure that the chimneys we service are up to local and national standards and operating as safely as possible. That means we perform all three levels of inspections when they’re recommended and needed.
A level 1 inspection is a basic or standard inspection that involves an overall look at any readily accessible areas of the chimney system. If you haven’t made or noticed any changes to your system and you’ve kept up with annual inspections, a level 1 inspection may be all you need normally. It’s quick, provides a good overall look at the system, and it doesn’t require any specialized tools or the removal of any components in the fireplace or chimney.
A level 2 inspection is a more in-depth inspection of the chimney and fireplace system, and is recommended when there are problems, concerns, or changes. For example, if you’ve had a chimney fire, you’re buying or selling the home, or when you’re changing appliances or fuels. During a level II inspection, we’ll use a specialized video camera to get a look at the interior of the chimney flue, and check every other accessible portion of the chimney system as well (including attics and crawlspaces).
A level 3 inspection requires some minor or major demo work and is done when the problem can’t be pinpointed or resolved without getting a better look than a level 1 or 2 chimney inspection can provide. We will only perform a level 3 inspection if there’s no other way to get to the bottom of the problem you’re having, and we’ll always explain fully what we’re doing and why before starting.
Inspections may not seem all that important, but they can actually save you money and prevent you from ending up in a dangerous situation. So make annual inspections a normal part of your annual home maintenance plan.
Pro Tip: If you schedule your inspection in the spring or summer, you’ll get everything taken care of and out of the way well before the busy winter months. That means faster service and a fireplace that’s ready to go when temps drop.
