The Three Types of Chimney & Fireplace Inspections

The Nation Fire Protection Associations NFPA 211: Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid Fuel-Burning Appliances has set 3 different levels of chimney inspections. True Ventilation Chimney Sweeps carefully follows these levels of chimney inspections as members of the NFPA. It is important to note that the NFPA 211 requires a minimum of a level 1 inspection be preformed whenever the chimney is swept. Beware of chimney contractors who offer to sweep the chimney without an inspection! The 3 levels of chimney inspections include:

  • Level 1 Inspections
  • Level 2 Inspections
  • Level 3 Inspections

Never have your chimney worked on without first having it inspected by a qualified chimney professional!

Level 1 Chimney Inspections
As mentioned previously the NFPA 211 standard requires a minimum of a level 1 inspection be preformed whenever the chimney is cleaned. A level 1 chimney inspection entails visually inspecting all parts of the chimney, fireplace, or wood stove that are deemed readily accessible without tools, or ladders. At a minimum we at True Ventilation Chimney Sweeps preform a level 1 inspection with parts of a level 2 by getting on the roof to further inspect the condition of the chimney structure. Chimneys often can contain issues out of sight from the ground so it is important to make sure your chimney contractor is getting on the roof to properly inspect the chimney for your Catskill NY or Hudson Valley home!

During a level 2 chimney inspection, technicians are required to inspect the chimney on the roof, the basement or crawl space, inspect the chimney in the attic space, and do a video inspection of the chimney flue liners interior. Whenever preforming these aspects of inspection we are checking for the following things.
