It is important to note that the NFPA 211 requires a minimum of a level 1 inspection be preformed whenever the chimney is swept. Beware of chimney contractors who offer to sweep the chimney without an inspection! The 3 levels of chimney inspections include:
- Level 1 Inspections
- Level 2 Inspections
- Level 3 Inspections
Never have your chimney worked on without first having it inspected by a qualified chimney professional!
Level 1 Chimney Inspections
As mentioned previously the NFPA 211 standard requires a minimum of a level 1 inspection be preformed whenever the chimney is cleaned. A level 1 chimney inspection entails visually inspecting all parts of the chimney, fireplace, or wood stove that are deemed readily accessible without tools, or ladders. At a minimum we at True Ventilation Chimney Sweeps preform a level 1 inspection with parts of a level 2 by getting on the roof to further inspect the condition of the chimney structure. Chimneys often can contain issues out of sight from the ground so it is important to make sure your chimney contractor is getting on the roof to properly inspect the chimney for your Catskill NY or Hudson Valley home!
Level 2 Chimney Inspections
Level 2 Chimney Inspections are the NFPA 211's 2nd level of chimney inspections. A level 2 inspection of the chimney is required whenever their is a home sale or transfer of property. This level of chimney inspection entails every aspect of a level 1 inspection plus a few other requirements. During a level 2 chimney inspection, technicians are required to inspect the chimney on the roof, the basement or crawl space, inspect the chimney in the attic space, and do a video inspection of the chimney flue liners interior. Whenever preforming these aspects of inspection we are checking for the following things.
- Chimney Clearances to Combustibles in Attic Space
- Proper Chimney Footing and Clearances in Basement
- Chimney Flue Cracks, Spalling, or Damage to Flue Tiles
- Chimney is Weather Tight Above Roof
Level 3 Chimney Inspection
Of the 3 levels of chimney inspections level 3 is the least common. a Level 3 inspection involves all aspects of a level 1 and 2 inspection plus removing walls, and preforming demolition work to the chimney to access areas that are normally inaccessible. Level 3 chimney inspections can be very costly and damaging to the home. If one of our certified chimney technicians believes you may need a level 3 inspection done to your chimney he will be sure to also provide you with all of your potential options in terms of chimney repair after the fact.
